When a buyer tells me, “We need a Higg Index certification from your factory,” I do not immediately start talking about documents, fees, or audit dates.

“Which Higg Index result does your customer actually require?”
That question can save a factory a great deal of time.
I have seen manufacturers spend weeks preparing for what they called a “HIGG certification,” only to discover that the customer actually wanted a HIGG FEM assessment and verification.
That distinction matters because Higg FEM is an environmental performance assessment, while verification is a separate process used to check whether the facility completed the assessment accurately.

This is why I recommend avoiding vague statements such as:
“We have a Higg certificate.”
Instead, I would say exactly what the factory has completed.
For example:
“Our Higg FEM assessment has been completed and verified.”
That is much clearer for an international buyer.
Why would a clothing brand, footwear company, home-textile buyer, or other consumer-goods company ask for Higg information?
The answer is fairly practical.
A global brand may work with hundreds or thousands of facilities.
It cannot physically run a completely different environmental assessment at every factory every month.
A common measurement framework makes supplier information easier to compare.

Imagine a manufacturer supplies five international customers.

The factory's EHS team spends its time answering similar questions in five different formats.
A common framework can reduce that repetition.
Depending on the applicable Higg module and reporting requirements, buyers can gain information about areas such as:
Environmental management
Energy consumption
Greenhouse-gas emissions
Water use

Air emissions
Waste

For me, the important word is data.
A buyer does not just want a factory to say:
“We care about the environment.”
The buyer wants to understand what the factory actually measures and manages.

I start with a data and responsibility map.
I want to know who owns each piece of information.

The table is not an official Cascale form.
It is the type of working document I recommend because it answers an important question:
Who can prove this number?
That question becomes especially important when a factory has several departments using different spreadsheets.
The EHS manager tells me:
“Our annual electricity use is 3.8 million kWh.”
I then ask Finance.
Finance says:
“Our invoices show 3.9 million kWh.”
Engineering says:
“Our meter summary says 3.75 million.”
This does not automatically mean someone made a mistake.
The reporting periods may be different.
A meter may have been replaced.
One number may include a rented production building.
Another may not.
But these differences must be understood before the assessment is finalized.
Good Higg data starts with reconciliation, not guessing.
When I prepare a factory for Higg-related work, I focus heavily on areas where numbers and physical operations need to match.
Energy is more than an electricity bill.
I want to understand:
What energy sources the factory uses
How consumption is measured
Which equipment consumes the most
How production volume affects consumption
Whether improvements have been measured
For example, consider this simple scenario:

If I look only at total electricity, consumption increased.
But production increased much faster.
The factory actually used less electricity per unit.
This is why I always ask factories to understand both absolute consumption and intensity.

Water data needs a similar approach.
I want to trace:
Water source → Meter → Production process → Wastewater → Treatment → Discharge or reuse
A factory may purchase water from a municipal supplier.
Another may use groundwater.
Another may use both.
The answer should reflect the factory's actual situation.
For a dyeing factory, I pay particular attention to process water.
For a food plant, cleaning can be a major water user.
For a facility with cooling systems, utility operations may be important.
The point is simple:
Do not copy another factory's environmental story.
Your factory has its own processes.
Waste is another area where I frequently find weak records.
A factory may know that it generates:
Fabric scraps
Packaging
Sludge
Used oil
Chemical containers
General waste
But knowing the names of the waste streams is not enough.
I want to know how quantities are measured and where the waste goes.

If a waste contractor provides weighing tickets, keep them.
If waste is measured by the factory, keep the weighing records.
If a calculation method is used, document how it works.
Chemical management should be connected from purchase to final handling.
I normally map it like this:
Purchase → Inventory → Storage → Production use → Waste/empty container → Disposal
A chemical inventory that exists only on a computer is not enough.
I want the warehouse team to know where chemicals are stored.
I want employees to understand basic handling and spill procedures.
I want the inventory to reflect what is actually on site.
That is where paperwork meets real factory management.
This is probably the most important comparison for a manufacturer researching Higg Index certification.
These activities can look similar from the outside.
Someone reviews documents.
Someone asks questions.
Someone may visit the factory.
But the purpose is different.

So if a factory has environmental weaknesses, verification does not magically make those weaknesses disappear.
Instead, the process can help identify where the information or practices need improvement.
If a customer requires a verified Higg result, I explain the process in simple steps.
The facility must first complete and post its FEM self-assessment.

This means the factory should not contact a verifier while the assessment is still half-finished and expect verification to start immediately.

I strongly recommend checking the current approved status rather than relying on an old brochure.

The verifier checks the assessment answers individually according to the applicable verification protocol.
This can include:
Document review
Interviews
Data review
Site observation
Supporting evidence
Quantitative information
For onsite verification, the verifier physically visits the facility.
For offsite verification, the process can use documents, photographs, email, web conferencing, and other remote methods where permitted. (How to Higg)
After verification, the facility reviews the verification findings.
Official guidance explains that questions can be identified as accurate or inaccurate, with the verifier providing the appropriate correction and explanation when an answer is found inaccurate. (How to Higg)
This is an important point.
An inaccurate answer is not the same thing as a failed factory.
It may simply mean the factory misunderstood the question or reported information incorrectly.
One question I receive often is:
“Can we do the Higg verification remotely?”
The answer depends on the applicable program requirements and what the factory needs to communicate.

I would not choose the method simply because one is cheaper.
Instead, I ask:
What does the customer require?
What does the current Higg program permit?
Does the factory need public score communication?
How complicated are the production processes?
How strong is the evidence?
Those questions lead to a much better decision.
If I had only one week to help a factory prepare, I would not try to rewrite every environmental procedure.
I would focus on evidence.
Make sure everyone understands the same period.
Do not allow Finance, Production, and EHS to work from different twelve-month periods.
Compare:
Invoices vs. meter records vs. internal summaries.
Investigate unusual differences.
Do not simply select the number that looks best.
Production data is often needed to understand intensity.
I check:
Monthly production
Annual production
Product categories
Units
Production changes
If the factory doubled production in June, I want that change to be visible in the environmental story.
I physically look at:
Chemical storage
Waste collection areas
Wastewater systems
Energy equipment
Water meters
Air-emission sources
Emergency equipment
The assessment should describe the factory I can actually see.
I ask simple questions.
“Where does this chemical come from?”
“Where do you put used containers?”
“How do you record waste?”
“What happens if there is a spill?”

The best answers are usually natural.
Employees should understand the work rather than memorize an environmental speech.

Understanding of your production processes
