Some companies still have old OHSAS 18001 documents, particularly organizations that operated an occupational health and safety system before ISO 45001 became the international standard.

The important point is that ISO 45001 is not simply OHSAS 18001 with a new number. It takes a broader management view of occupational health and safety.
2. How I Turn ISO 45001 Requirements into Real Workplace Risk Control
When I review an occupational health and safety system, I do not want to see risk assessment treated as a once-a-year exercise.
Risk changes when production changes.
A new machine is installed. A production line is moved. A chemical is replaced. A new contractor arrives. A night shift is added. Maintenance work begins. The workforce changes. A new warehouse opens.
Each change can create new hazards.
ISO 45001 gives organizations a structured approach for managing those changes.
First, I look at hazard identification
A hazard is something that has the potential to cause injury or ill health. In a factory, that could be machinery, electricity, chemicals, noise, heat, dust, vehicles, manual handling, working at height, confined spaces, or other physical and organizational conditions.
I also encourage companies to look beyond the obvious hazards.
For example, repetitive work may create ergonomic concerns. Poor shift arrangements may affect fatigue. A badly designed production area may create traffic conflicts. Pressure to meet urgent orders may encourage unsafe shortcuts.
Then I look at risk assessment
Not every hazard carries the same level of risk. The organization needs a consistent method to evaluate risk and decide which controls deserve priority.
I prefer methods that employees and supervisors can understand. A complicated risk matrix is not automatically a better risk assessment. If workers cannot understand the result, it becomes difficult to use the assessment in daily work.
Then comes the control itself
The best control is usually the one that prevents the hazard from reaching the worker in the first place.
For example, if a machine has a dangerous moving part, simply telling workers to wear gloves may not be enough. The organization should consider whether the hazard can be eliminated, isolated, guarded, or otherwise controlled through the process or equipment before depending mainly on administrative rules or PPE.
Finally, I ask whether the control works
This is where audits and workplace observations become useful.
If a procedure says one thing but workers routinely do something else, I want to understand why. Perhaps the procedure is unrealistic. Perhaps the equipment has changed. Perhaps training is weak. Perhaps production conditions make the procedure difficult to follow.
That information is valuable because it shows where the management system needs improvement.

3. Health and Safety ISO 45001 Can Support Cost Control and Operational Efficiency
Safety and cost control may sound like two completely different subjects. In a factory, they are often closely connected.
Let me give a simple example.
If a machine accident stops a production line for half a day, the cost is not limited to medical treatment. The company may also lose production time, miss a delivery target, move employees to another task, repair damaged equipment, investigate the incident, and spend management time dealing with the aftermath.
If the incident is serious, the consequences can be much larger.
A good ISO 45001 health and safety management system cannot guarantee that accidents will never happen. No responsible professional should make that promise. What it can do is help an organization identify and control risks before they create avoidable disruption.
Where I see the business value
1. Fewer avoidable disruptions. Better hazard control can reduce the likelihood of incidents that interrupt production.
2. Better use of management time. Clear responsibilities and reporting processes make it easier to find information and follow up on problems.
3. More stable workforce management. A safe and well-managed workplace can support employee confidence and reduce some of the problems associated with poor working conditions.
4. Stronger customer confidence. An independently assessed management system can provide useful evidence to customers and supply chain partners.
5. Better preparation for change. A structured management system gives the organization a method for considering OH&S risks when processes, equipment, people, or facilities change.
6. Better corrective action. Instead of repeatedly fixing the same symptom, the organization can investigate root causes and improve the underlying process.
This is why I do not describe ISO 45001 simply as a safety certificate. I see it as part of operational management.

In other words, the purpose is not to spend money on safety and hope for a return. The purpose is to understand risk better, control it systematically, and avoid costs created by preventable failures wherever reasonably possible.

One problem I see in growing companies is that safety knowledge often belongs to individual employees.
An experienced maintenance manager knows which machine creates trouble. A production supervisor knows which operation is dangerous. A senior technician knows how to handle a difficult maintenance job.
That knowledge is valuable.
But if it stays inside one person's head, the company remains vulnerable.
ISO 45001 helps organizations turn individual experience into a repeatable management system.

If a safety procedure is ten pages long but nobody can understand it during a busy production shift, the document is not doing its job.

This is another reason I like the ISO 45001 structure.
Organizations that already have ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 do not necessarily need three completely separate management systems.

A management system should have evidence that it is operating. Training should happen. Inspections should happen. Workers should participate. Incidents should be reviewed. Corrective actions should be followed up.
Step 7: Certification audit
The organization then goes through the applicable third-party certification audit process. The exact audit arrangements depend on the organization's scope, size, number of sites, complexity, workforce, and other relevant factors.
Step 8: Continue improving after certification
Certification is not the finish line. The organization still needs to maintain and improve its OH&S management system.
I believe this approach is important because an audit should provide more than a pass-or-fail feeling. It should give management useful information about how its system is performing.
At the same time, I respect the need for impartiality. A third-party certification activity must be objective. The certification process should evaluate the organization against applicable requirements rather than simply tell the client what it wants to hear.

Certification is the formal conformity assessment of an organization's management system. Accreditation is the independent recognition of a conformity assessment body's competence for defined activities. These terms should not be used as if they mean exactly the same thing.

8. My View: ISO 45001 Should Become Part of the Way You Work
I have seen companies treat safety as a separate program that sits beside the real business.
Production has its targets. Quality has its procedures. Maintenance has its schedules. HR has its training. The safety team has its inspections.
That separation can create gaps.
ISO 45001 gives companies a chance to connect these activities.
When production plans a new process, OH&S risks should be considered. When purchasing selects new equipment, safety should be part of the decision. When HR hires new employees, competence and training should be considered. When maintenance plans shutdown work, hazards should be assessed. When management reviews business performance, occupational health and safety should be part of the discussion.
