2. I Build ISO 14001 Around Real Factory Operations
I have never believed that a strong management system starts with a stack of documents.
It starts with the operation.
Before I think about forms and procedures, I want to understand what happens in the business every day. What does the company produce? What materials enter the factory? What happens during production? Where are chemicals used? How is wastewater handled? Where does waste go? Who controls environmental equipment? What happens when something goes wrong?
Once these questions are answered, the management system becomes much easier to understand.

Every company has its own operating conditions. Location, industry, technology, customer requirements, legal environment, suppliers, employees, and production processes all matter.
I use this information to understand the organization's environmental context and the issues that may affect the intended results of the environmental management system.
Identifying Environmental Aspects
An environmental aspect is basically an element of an organization's activities, products, or services that can interact with the environment.
That may sound technical, but the idea is simple. If a process uses electricity, produces waste, consumes water, creates emissions, or handles chemicals, I want the organization to understand what environmental effect may come from that activity.
Not every aspect will have the same level of importance. The company needs a reasonable method for determining which environmental aspects deserve greater control and attention.
Understanding Compliance Obligations
Environmental management cannot be separated from applicable legal and other requirements.
A factory may have permits, environmental regulations, customer commitments, local requirements, waste handling obligations, emissions limits, or other conditions that apply to its operations.
I want to see a system that helps the organization identify relevant requirements, keep information current, and evaluate whether it is meeting those obligations.
Creating Operational Controls
Once important environmental risks and requirements are understood, controls need to reach the people doing the work.
A chemical storage procedure is not useful if the workers who handle chemicals do not understand it. A waste procedure is not effective if nobody checks how waste is classified. An emergency plan is not enough if people do not know their responsibilities.

Finally, I want to know whether the system is working. That means using appropriate monitoring, measurement, internal audits, compliance evaluations, corrective actions, and management review.

Environmental problems rarely stay inside the environmental department.

There is a simple test I like to use when discussing standardization: what happens if the person who knows everything leaves the company tomorrow?
If the answer is “we would have a serious problem,” the process needs more structure.
Manufacturing businesses depend heavily on experienced people. That is normal. But relying only on personal experience can become risky as a company grows.
