In real business situations, I often see value in combining the two. For example, a chemical storage area creates an environmental concern if chemicals leak into soil or water. At the same time, it creates an occupational health and safety concern if workers are exposed to hazardous substances.
The two standards do not become the same standard. Instead, they can work together.

A manufacturing business normally has many moving parts. Employees operate machines, maintain equipment, move materials, use chemicals, package products, load vehicles, and sometimes work with contractors or visitors.
Safety problems rarely come from one isolated mistake. More often, they come from a weak process: unclear responsibility, poor maintenance, insufficient training, missing safeguards, weak supervision, or a hazard that was never properly identified.

2. How I Build ISO 45001 Into Everyday Factory Management
I do not believe that an effective ISO 45001 system should live only in the safety department.
Safety needs to be part of purchasing, production, maintenance, human resources, engineering, warehouse operations, contractor control, and management decisions.
For example, suppose a company buys a new production machine. A weak approach is to purchase the machine first and think about safety after installation. A stronger approach considers safety requirements during equipment selection, installation, commissioning, training, and operation.
The same principle applies to chemicals, production changes, new employees, new contractors, warehouse layouts, and changes in working hours.
Understanding the organization
I begin by understanding the company's activities, structure, sites, workers, products, processes, customers, and operating environment.
A small office and a large metal-processing plant should not have the same safety system simply because both want an ISO 45001 certificate. Their hazards are completely different.
A good system reflects the organization rather than forcing the organization to copy a generic template.
Identifying hazards
Hazard identification is one of the areas I pay close attention to.
I look beyond normal production. Routine work is only part of the picture. Maintenance, cleaning, equipment startup, shutdown, abnormal conditions, emergency situations, contractor work, and temporary activities can create very different risks.
Consider a simple example. A cutting machine may operate safely for eight hours under normal conditions. During maintenance, however, an employee may need to open a guard and work close to stored energy. The risk has changed.
That means the management system needs to consider energy isolation, maintenance procedures, competence, supervision, and verification.
Risk assessment in plain English
Risk assessment does not need to be complicated to be useful.
I want the people responsible for the work to understand what the assessment means. A useful assessment considers the hazard, who may be affected, existing controls, the level of risk, and what additional action is needed.
The important point is that the assessment should lead to action.
If a risk is identified but nobody changes anything, the assessment has become paperwork instead of management.
The hierarchy of controls
When controlling hazards, I encourage organizations to think beyond personal protective equipment.
PPE is important, but it should not automatically be the first answer. Where possible, the hazard itself should be removed or reduced at the source.

If I can install an effective machine guard, I would rather do that than rely only on an instruction telling workers not to touch the moving part.
If pedestrians and forklifts frequently share the same space, physical separation may be stronger than simply putting up a warning sign.

3. Worker Participation, Risk Control and Emergency Preparedness
One thing I strongly value in ISO 45001 is the attention given to workers.
People who perform a task every day often see problems that managers cannot see from an office. They know which guard is difficult to use, which chemical container is awkward to move, which aisle becomes blocked during busy periods, or which procedure does not match actual work.
Ignoring that knowledge is a missed opportunity.
Making worker participation practical
I do not think worker participation needs to mean endless meetings.
It can be simple:
Short safety discussions before high-risk work.
A clear hazard-reporting process.
Worker involvement in risk assessments.
Safety committees where appropriate.
Incident reviews that focus on learning rather than blame.
Suggestions for improving equipment or work methods.
The important thing is that workers can speak up and that management takes useful feedback seriously.
Emergency preparedness is more than a document
I often use a simple test when reviewing emergency arrangements: “If something happens at 2 a.m., will people know what to do?”
A written emergency procedure is useful, but it needs to connect with reality.
For example, a company may have an evacuation plan. But can workers find the emergency exit? Are escape routes clear? Is the alarm audible? Are emergency contacts current? Do contractors know the assembly point? Has the company practiced the plan?
These questions reveal whether the emergency system is ready for real use.
Incident investigation
When an incident happens, I do not recommend stopping at “the employee made a mistake.” That answer is usually too simple.
I want to understand why the mistake was possible.
Was training sufficient? Was the procedure clear? Was the machine difficult to operate? Was production pressure involved? Was supervision adequate? Had the same problem been reported before?
Finding the underlying cause makes corrective action much more useful.
Corrective action should close the loop
A good corrective action has three parts in my view: understand the cause, take suitable action, and check whether the action worked.
For example, if workers repeatedly slip on a wet floor, putting up another sign may not solve the problem. I would want to know why the floor becomes wet, whether drainage is adequate, whether equipment is leaking, and whether the cleaning process creates the condition.
The stronger solution may involve engineering changes rather than another reminder.
4. ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and the Business Case for Integration
Many companies do not come to me for only one management system.
A manufacturer may already have ISO 9001 for quality. It may then need ISO 14001 for environmental management because of customer or market expectations. Later, a major buyer may request ISO 45001 certification to demonstrate occupational health and safety management.
At that point, building three completely separate systems can create unnecessary work.
ISO management standards are designed around a common high-level structure, which makes integration possible.
What can be shared?
Depending on the organization's structure, some management processes can support multiple standards:

Consider chemical management.
From an environmental perspective, I may need to consider storage, leakage, waste, disposal, and potential contamination.
From a safety perspective, I may need to consider worker exposure, handling procedures, labeling, ventilation, emergency response, and PPE.
The same activity creates two different management questions.
This is why I see value in an integrated approach for many industrial organizations.

Climate-related considerations
Climate change is also becoming more relevant to management-system planning.
For some organizations, higher temperatures may increase heat stress. Severe weather may affect emergency planning. Flooding may interrupt operations. Changes in working conditions may create new occupational risks.
I do not recommend adding climate-related statements just to make a system sound modern. I recommend asking a much simpler question: Does climate change create a relevant issue or requirement for our organization?
If the answer is yes, the issue should be considered in the appropriate management process.

When I explain the business value of ISO 45001, I avoid promising a fixed percentage of cost savings. No responsible certification provider can guarantee that every company will save the same amount.

An accident may lead to injury costs, equipment damage, lost production time, investigation work, replacement labor, retraining, overtime, delivery delays, or customer concerns.
Even when no accident occurs, unsafe conditions can indicate weak processes.

I prefer to look at both what has already happened and what the organization is doing to prevent problems.

The exact indicators should depend on the company's risks. A warehouse and a chemical plant should not use exactly the same dashboard.
Standardization can save management time
Imagine a company with several factories. If every site manages safety differently, the corporate team has to learn several systems.

The sites can still keep controls suited to their local risks, but the basic management process can be consistent: identify, assess, control, monitor, review, improve.
