A good FEM audit should connect three things:
What the factory says. What the records show. What is actually happening.
If all three tell the same story, the assessment is much easier to understand.
If they do not match, I want to know why.
For example, a factory may report a certain annual electricity consumption. I will want to understand where that number came from. It may come from utility bills, meters, fuel records, or a combination of sources.
That does not mean every number must look perfect.
Real factories have production changes, maintenance shutdowns, new machines, seasonal demand, changes in product mix, and other factors. What matters is whether the factory can explain its information clearly and support it with appropriate evidence.

I do not expect a small garment factory and a large dyeing mill to have the same environmental profile.
A dyeing facility may have significant water, wastewater, steam and chemical management needs. A cut-and-sew facility may have a different environmental footprint, with greater attention on electricity, waste, packaging, air emissions and general environmental controls.
The assessment needs to reflect the factory that actually exists.
One of the first questions I hear is: “Is FEM the same as a customer audit?”
Not exactly.
A customer factory audit may check quality, social compliance, worker safety, security, production capability, or customer-specific requirements.
A FEM environmental audit focuses on environmental performance and the accuracy of the facility's HIGG FEM assessment.
That difference is important because the preparation is different too.

There is also an important wording point.
I do not describe Higg FEM as a conventional pass-or-fail certification.
Higg FEM verification is designed to check whether a facility has correctly understood and completed its assessment and whether the information is supported by appropriate evidence. That is different from a simple “pass the audit” model.
So when I prepare a factory for a Higg FEM audit, I ask the team to think about accuracy first.
Can we explain the answer? Can we show the evidence? Does the evidence reflect the real factory?
Those are much better questions than simply asking how to get a higher score.
Preparation is often where factories can save the most time.
I have seen teams spend days searching through old folders because information was not organized during the year.
There is a simple way to avoid that.
Make environmental information part of normal factory management.
When I support Higg FEM audit preparation, I usually follow a practical sequence.
I first look at the production scope, products, processes, buildings, utilities, environmental systems, and relevant activities.
I examine the facility's answers and identify questions where evidence, calculations, explanations, or clarification may be needed.
I connect important answers with the records that support them. This may include bills, permits, reports, meter readings, waste records, chemical inventories, procedures, training documents, and improvement records.
I compare related information. Energy use, water use, production volume, wastewater quantity, waste generation, and other figures should have a reasonable relationship.
For applicable onsite verification, I compare the assessment with what is happening in the factory. This may include production areas, utility rooms, chemical storage, waste areas, wastewater treatment, and other relevant environmental impact points.
If a number changes sharply, I want to know the reason. It could be a real improvement, a production change, a new machine, a change in reporting boundaries, or something that needs correction.
The qualified verification is completed according to the applicable Higg FEM requirements and verification process.
Current Higg program guidance distinguishes between onsite and offsite verification approaches. Onsite verification involves a visit to the facility, while offsite verification can use documents, photographs, digital records, and remote interviews as applicable. Requirements can change by program cycle, so I always recommend using the current Higg requirements when planning a verification.
The important thing is not to prepare a “perfect factory” for one day.
Prepare an accurate picture of the factory.
Environmental problems can quickly become business problems.
Consider a chemical storage issue.
It may start as a small warehouse problem. Then an employee uses the wrong chemical. A spill occurs. Production stops. Workers need to respond. The customer asks questions.
Or consider wastewater.
A treatment system may appear fine most of the time, but if operating records are weak, the factory may not notice a developing problem until the discharge result becomes abnormal.
Or consider energy.
If a compressor develops a leak, the factory may continue paying for unnecessary electricity for months if nobody tracks energy use carefully.
This is why I see a FEM audit service as part of risk management.
I look at the control points.
Who owns the environmental process?
What information is recorded?
How often is it checked?
Who reviews unusual results?
What happens when something goes wrong?
Can the factory prove that corrective action was completed?
These questions are easy to understand, even for employees who are not environmental specialists.
That is important to me.
A good system should not depend on one expert who knows everything. If that person leaves the company, the system should continue working.
I believe it can help, mainly by making resource use easier to understand.
But I want to be realistic.
There is no universal saving percentage for Higg FEM. Every factory has different equipment, processes, products, working hours, climate conditions, energy prices, and production volumes.
What FEM can do is create a structured view of environmental performance.
Once the factory has better data, management can make better questions.

For example, if a factory discovers that one process uses much more energy than expected, management can investigate equipment condition, operating settings, maintenance, production scheduling, or technology options.

I do not want a factory to prepare for FEM once a year and then forget everything afterward.
