When I talk with textile and apparel manufacturers about a FEM factory audit, I usually start by clearing up one point: Higg FEM verification is not simply another factory inspection where someone walks around with a checklist and decides whether the factory “passes.”

The real job is more useful than that.

I look at whether a facility has understood its Higg Facility Environmental Module (Higg FEM) assessment correctly and whether its answers are supported by actual records, data, equipment, processes, and conditions at the facility. Current Cascale guidance describes Higg FEM verification as a process designed to improve the consistency, comparability, and credibility of facility environmental data. It can involve desktop review or onsite verification, depending on the applicable requirements.

That is how I approach the work at GAIA Standard Technical Service Co., Ltd. (GAIA).

1. What I Actually Check During a FEM Factory Audit


Higg FEM is used to assess environmental performance at manufacturing facilities. The current framework covers seven major environmental impact areas: environmental management systems, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, water use, wastewater, emissions to air, waste management, and chemical management.

That sounds broad because it is broad.

A modern textile factory has many moving parts. Electricity enters the factory. Water enters the production process. Chemicals may be stored and used. Boilers, compressors, generators, wastewater treatment systems, production machines, warehouses, and waste areas all have an environmental impact.

During a FEM factory audit, I therefore do not focus only on what is written in a procedure.

I want to understand what is really happening.

For example, if a factory reports electricity consumption, I want to know where the number came from. Was it taken from a utility bill? A factory meter? Several sub-meters? A manual reading? Was the reporting period consistent?

If a factory reports water consumption, I look at the same basic logic.

If a factory reports that wastewater is treated onsite, I want to understand the treatment system, its operation, monitoring, records, and actual site conditions.

This is why I prefer to call the work a factory environmental audit and verification process rather than a document check.

Current Cascale verification guidance also identifies physical observation areas such as production areas, chemical and waste storage, utility rooms, wastewater treatment plants, exhaust points, and other processes that may create environmental impacts.

In simple terms, I compare the story on paper with what is happening on the factory floor.


2. FEM Factory Audit vs. a Traditional Factory Audit


Manufacturers sometimes ask me, “Is a Higg FEM audit the same as a customer factory audit?”

My answer is no.

A traditional customer audit may focus on a buyer's specific requirements, product quality, working conditions, safety, social compliance, or a particular code of conduct. A FEM factory audit focuses on the facility's environmental assessment and the accuracy of the information reported through Higg FEM.

That difference changes how I prepare.

There is another important point: I do not describe Higg FEM as a conventional pass/fail certification.

Current Higg guidance says that verification confirms whether a facility has understood and answered its self-assessment correctly. The purpose is to give external stakeholders more confidence in the information captured on the Higg platform.

So if a factory is preparing for a Higg FEM factory audit, I encourage the management team to stop thinking only about “How do we pass?”

A better question is:

“Can we clearly prove that the information we entered is correct?”

That mindset makes preparation much easier.


3. How I Prepare a Factory for Higg FEM Verification


Good preparation does not mean creating a mountain of documents.

It means making the right information easy to find.

I normally begin by understanding the facility's production process. A dyeing factory may have major water, wastewater and chemical concerns. A cut-and-sew garment factory may have a different environmental profile. A textile mill with boilers and large compressed-air systems may need to pay close attention to energy use.

I therefore do not recommend copying another factory's Higg FEM answers.

Your factory should describe your factory.

My preparation process usually follows a straightforward path.

  1. Understand the facility. I review the site type, products, production processes, operating scope and relevant environmental activities.

  2. Review the FEM assessment. I look at the answers already entered and identify areas that may require clarification or evidence.

  3. Map the evidence. I connect important answers with bills, permits, reports, logs, calculations, procedures and other records.

  4. Check the numbers. I compare data across different sources and reporting periods.

  5. Check the factory floor. For onsite verification, I look at relevant areas and compare actual conditions with the assessment.

  6. Discuss unclear points. I work with responsible employees to understand unusual figures, missing information or differences between records.

  7. Complete the verification process. The qualified verification is performed according to the applicable Higg FEM requirements.

Current Cascale guidance describes two verification approaches: onsite verification, where the verifier visits the facility, and offsite verification, where documents, photographs, digital records and remote interviews may be used. Facilities that want to publicly communicate Higg Index scoring must complete onsite verification under the current guidance.

I also pay close attention to data consistency.

Imagine a factory reports that production increased by 20%, electricity consumption fell by 35%, and there was no major equipment or process change.

That does not automatically mean the data is wrong.

But it is a good question to ask.

Maybe production moved between buildings. Maybe the reporting boundary changed. Maybe a new energy source was introduced. Maybe a meter was replaced.

A professional FEM environmental audit should make these questions easier to answer, not hide them.


4. Controlling Environmental Risk Before It Becomes a Business Problem


When I work with factory managers, I often explain that environmental management is also risk management.

A wastewater problem can become a production problem.

A chemical storage problem can become a safety problem.

A missing permit can become a compliance problem.

Poor energy monitoring can become a cost problem.

Weak environmental records can become a customer-confidence problem.

These issues are connected.

That is why I use a practical risk-based view during FEM factory audit services.

For chemicals, I look beyond whether there is a chemical list. I want to know whether the list reflects what is actually in the factory. Are containers labeled? Are incompatible materials separated where required? Are relevant safety data available? Does the storage area match the written procedure?

For waste, I look at how waste moves through the factory. Where is it generated? Where is it stored? Who handles it? How is it transferred to the next party? Can the factory show records?

For wastewater, I want to understand the system rather than just look at one laboratory report. A good test result is useful, but it does not tell me everything about daily operation.

For energy, I look for the major users. Boilers, compressors, heating systems, drying equipment, air-conditioning systems and production machinery can all affect energy demand.

For water, I look at the relationship between incoming water, production processes, wastewater and output.

It is not complicated when you break it down.

Where does the resource come from? Where does it go? How much is used? Who controls it? What happens when something goes wrong?

Those simple questions can reveal a lot.


5. Using FEM Data to Find Efficiency and Cost Opportunities


I do not promise that every factory will save a fixed amount of money because it completes Higg FEM verification. That would be unrealistic.

What I can say is that better measurement often helps management find waste that was previously difficult to see.

Suppose a factory knows its annual electricity bill but does not track energy by major production area. Management knows the total cost, but not necessarily the source of the problem when consumption rises.

Now suppose the factory records energy use together with production activity. Suddenly, a different picture becomes possible.

The same principle applies to water, waste and chemicals.

For me, the best result is not simply a completed verification. It is a factory that understands its own numbers better than it did before.


6. Turning One FEM Factory Audit into a Better Management System


One thing I see quite often is the “annual rush.”

A factory receives a request from a customer. The environmental team starts searching for old electricity bills. Someone looks for the chemical inventory. Another person asks the wastewater treatment operator for records. Management wants everything finished quickly.

Then the verification is completed, and everyone goes back to normal.

I think there is a better way.

Use the FEM factory audit to build a routine.

Instead of collecting energy data once a year, collect it every month.

Instead of updating the chemical inventory only before verification, connect inventory updates with purchasing and warehouse management.

Instead of reviewing waste only when someone asks for a report, make waste records part of normal factory management.

Instead of keeping environmental responsibilities in one person's head, define who does what.

In my experience, a simple management chain works well:

Requirement → Responsibility → Procedure → Record → Review → Action → Improvement.
