For me, this is where Higg FEM becomes useful. It does not only ask, “Do you have an environmental policy?” It encourages the factory to look at what is actually happening in daily operations.

For example, a factory may have a written water-saving target. That is useful, but I also want to understand how the factory measures water use, who reviews the numbers, what the trend looks like, and whether improvement actions are really being carried out.

The same idea applies to chemicals. A chemical management procedure is only one part of the picture. I also look at how chemicals are stored, labeled, tracked, used, and controlled in the actual workplace.

  • Document review: I check relevant policies, procedures, records, permits, reports and supporting evidence.

  • Data review: I compare environmental figures with source records and other available information.

  • Employee interviews: I ask responsible employees how the system works in real life.

  • Site observation: Where onsite verification applies, I observe production, storage, utility, wastewater, waste and chemical areas.

  • Consistency checks: I compare what the assessment says with what the records and factory conditions show.

  • Verification reporting: I complete the required verification activities and reporting within the applicable program framework.

I believe this approach is especially important for international supply chains. A customer should not have to guess whether a sustainability statement is supported by reliable information.

At the same time, I do not expect a factory to be perfect. Manufacturing is complicated. Equipment fails, production changes, data systems improve, and management systems are not always mature.

What matters is that the information is truthful, the evidence is understandable, and the facility knows where it needs to improve.

I have always believed that environmental management should be connected with risk management. A factory does not operate in separate boxes. Energy, water, chemicals, wastewater, waste, workers, production quality, and customer requirements are all connected.

This is a much easier way to work.

5. Building a Standardized Factory System Around Higg FEM


One of the questions I often ask management is: “If the person responsible for this task leaves tomorrow, can someone else continue the work?”

If the answer is no, the factory may have a person-dependent system rather than a management system.

Higg FEM preparation can be a good opportunity to fix that.

I recommend giving each major environmental area a clear owner. The energy engineer should know how energy data is collected. The EHS team should understand wastewater records. The warehouse should know chemical inventory requirements. Management should know which targets are being tracked.

Then the factory needs a simple document and data structure.

Write down who owns each environmental topic. Keep it simple. One person can manage several areas, but every area should have a clear owner.
