When I explain Higg FEM to a factory manager for the first time, I normally put it in simple terms: it helps you understand what your factory uses, what your factory produces as waste, and how well you manage the environmental risks connected with production.
The assessment brings several environmental topics into one framework. Depending on the applicable Higg FEM version and facility scope, the main areas include environmental management systems, energy and greenhouse gases, water, wastewater, waste, and chemical management.
That broad scope is useful because manufacturing problems rarely stay in one department.
For example, poor chemical control can affect worker safety, wastewater, waste disposal, product requirements, and customer expectations. Poor water management can increase utility costs and wastewater treatment loads. Inefficient energy use can increase operating costs while also increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Higg FEM framework has also evolved over time. Current program resources include FEM 4.0 guidance, scoring methodology, calculation guidance, applicability logic, and question-by-question guidance. That means I do not recommend using an old factory checklist as the only preparation tool.
The assessment should always be completed according to the current applicable Higg FEM cycle and requirements.
Who can use Higg FEM?
Higg FEM can be relevant to many types of manufacturing facilities. In the textile supply chain, this can include facilities involved in fibers, yarns, fabrics, accessories, dyeing, printing, finishing, washing, garment production, and other manufacturing operations.
The exact questions that apply depend on the facility type and production activities. This is another reason I prefer to understand the factory before giving advice. A garment sewing facility and a textile dyeing mill should not prepare for Higg FEM in exactly the same way.
2. How I Approach the Higg FEM Assessment Before Verification
A common mistake is to think that Higg FEM preparation starts when the verifier arrives.
It does not.
Preparation starts when the facility begins completing the self-assessment.
According to the current verification workflow, a facility must fully complete and post its FEM self-assessment before verification can begin. The facility then selects the verifying body that it has already contacted and arranged the service with.
That sequence matters.
I want the facility's self-assessment to be based on real information before we enter the verification stage. If the factory is still guessing answers or collecting basic records when verification begins, the process becomes harder for everyone.
My first question: Where does the answer come from?
For every important assessment answer, I encourage the team to know its evidence source.
If the answer concerns electricity consumption, the team should know whether the data comes from utility bills, meters, a facility data management system, or another valid source.
If the answer concerns wastewater, the team should know which treatment system, discharge point, test report, permit, or operational record supports it.
If the answer concerns chemical management, the team should know where the chemical inventory, storage controls, safety information, and purchasing records are kept.
This sounds basic, but it makes a big difference.
My second question: Does the document match the factory?
A procedure can look excellent and still fail to describe what actually happens.
Suppose a written procedure says chemical containers must be labeled. During a site visit, I see several containers without clear labels. That difference needs attention.
The same principle applies to environmental targets. A factory may have a target to reduce water use by 10%, but I also want to know whether the target is measured, who owns it, and whether there is evidence of action.
My third question: Do the numbers make sense?
Data quality is a major part of a good HIGG assessment.
I look for simple things first: missing months, duplicate figures, unit changes, unusual jumps, unclear boundaries, and differences between records.
I do not assume that an unusual number is wrong. It may be completely correct. But the factory should be able to explain it.

What I review
Documents: I review the records that support applicable assessment answers.
Data: I look at the source and consistency of environmental figures.
People: I talk with employees who actually manage the relevant processes.
Site conditions: For onsite verification, I observe production and environmental management areas.
Process consistency: I compare what the factory says with what the evidence and site conditions show.
This last part is often where the most useful information appears.
A document tells me what should happen. A production area tells me what is happening. Good verification looks at both.

4. Using HIGG Assessment to Control Environmental Risk and Improve Efficiency
Many factories first approach Higg FEM because a customer asks for it. That is perfectly normal.
But once the system is running, I encourage management to use the data for something more useful than customer reporting.
Use it to manage the factory.
Energy: Find the expensive parts of production
Energy data can show where the factory spends money. But total electricity use is only the starting point.
I encourage factories to compare energy consumption with production volume and operating conditions. If production stays the same but electricity use rises sharply, management has a reason to investigate.
Maybe equipment efficiency has declined. Maybe maintenance is overdue. Maybe production scheduling has changed. Maybe a machine is running when it should not.
Water: Measure before trying to reduce
For wet processing facilities, water can be a major resource input. Dyeing, washing, printing, finishing, and similar processes can create large water demand.
Without reliable measurement, it is difficult to know whether a water-saving project actually worked.
Wastewater: Control the process, not just the test result
A wastewater test report is useful, but it is only one part of wastewater management.
I also want to understand treatment operation, maintenance, monitoring, discharge requirements, emergency controls, and records.
Waste: Find the material that should not be wasted
Waste can sometimes be a hidden production problem. High fabric waste may point to cutting issues. Excess packaging waste may point to purchasing or logistics practices. Repeated chemical disposal may point to poor inventory management.
Chemicals: Control risk before it becomes an incident
A clear chemical inventory helps management know what is stored onsite. Good labeling and storage reduce confusion. Proper handling reduces worker and environmental risk.
These are not complicated ideas. They are basic factory management habits.

I would never promise a factory that completing a HIGG assessment will automatically save a fixed percentage of operating costs. Real savings depend on equipment, production volume, process design, utility prices, and the factory's starting point.

One of the biggest benefits I see is when a factory stops treating Higg FEM as an annual project.
Instead, the factory builds simple routines that work every month.
I normally recommend starting with responsibility.
Who collects energy data? Who checks water data? Who manages wastewater records? Who maintains the chemical inventory? Who reviews waste records? Who reports environmental targets to management?
Write down the answers.
It sounds obvious, but clear responsibility prevents a lot of last-minute confusion.
Build a simple evidence system
I prefer a practical folder structure. Each environmental area should have a clear place for records. Employees should not have to search through hundreds of unrelated files every time someone asks a question.
Use monthly data checks
Do not wait for the Higg assessment deadline to discover missing information.
A short monthly review can check:
Are all energy records available?
Are water readings complete?
Are wastewater reports filed?
Are waste quantities recorded?
Is the chemical inventory current?
Were there any environmental incidents or unusual events?
Are improvement actions on schedule?
Connect Higg FEM with existing systems
