These questions sound straightforward. In practice, getting reliable answers can take some work.

For example, a factory may know its total electricity bill but not know how electricity use changes by production line. It may have a chemical list but not have a clear system for updating it. It may have wastewater testing reports but not connect those reports with daily treatment plant operation.

This is where I see the real value of a well-prepared HIGG FEM certification application.

The application process pushes the factory to organize information that may already exist but is scattered across purchasing, engineering, production, EHS, finance, warehouse, and management departments.

This is not an area where I recommend guessing.

If a permit is required by local law, the factory needs to understand its status and keep appropriate evidence. An expired document can create a serious problem even when the factory has good environmental practices elsewhere.

Data availability

Then I ask a very practical question: Where do your numbers come from?

If the factory reports monthly electricity use, I want to know whether the number comes from a utility bill, meter, internal accounting system, or another reliable source.

If water consumption is reported, I want to understand whether the figure covers the whole site or only part of the operation.

This basic source-checking work can prevent many data problems later.

I do not expect every factory to have perfect records on day one. What I want is a clear picture of what exists, what is missing, and what needs to be improved before verification.


3. How I Organize the HIGG FEM Application Evidence


Once the facility profile is clear, I move to evidence.

This is where many first-time applicants become overwhelmed. They hear the word “evidence” and start collecting everything they can find.

I take the opposite approach.

I organize evidence around the question being answered.

Energy records

For energy, I may review electricity bills, fuel purchase records, meter readings, renewable energy information where applicable, equipment records, and calculations used to summarize consumption.

I pay attention to dates and units. A number without a clear period or unit is not very useful.

Water records

For water, I look at the source and the amount used. The factory may receive municipal water, use groundwater where legally permitted, purchase water from another source, or use more than one source.

I want the data to tell a consistent story.

Wastewater evidence

For facilities with wastewater treatment, I look at relevant permits, treatment system information, testing reports, operating records, maintenance, chemical use, and other applicable evidence.

I also want the responsible people to understand the system. A file full of laboratory reports is not enough if nobody knows what to do when a result moves outside the expected range.

Waste evidence

Waste records should help the factory understand what is being generated and how it is handled.

Depending on the facility, this can include general waste, production waste, recyclable materials, hazardous waste, sludge, packaging waste, and other applicable categories.

Chemical evidence

Chemical management is another area where I prefer a simple, controlled system.

The factory should know what chemicals it has, where they are stored, who can use them, what safety information applies, and how employees are trained.

In a dyeing or finishing plant, chemical management can become a major part of environmental risk control. In a sewing factory, the chemical profile may be much smaller. Again, I start with the actual operation.

Take water consumption as an example. If the factory only looks at the annual water bill, a problem can remain hidden for months. If it reviews monthly use and compares the data with production, unusual changes become easier to notice.

The same applies to electricity, chemicals, waste, and wastewater.

Risk 1: Poor data

Incorrect environmental data can lead to poor decisions. I therefore check calculation methods, units, reporting periods, source documents, and internal consistency.

Risk 2: Weak legal control

Factories operate under local environmental and business rules. Those rules can change, and different locations can have different requirements.

I recommend assigning responsibility for monitoring applicable legal requirements instead of assuming that someone will remember.

Risk 3: Chemical control problems

Chemical risk is not only about having a chemical list. Storage, labeling, access, handling, training, spill response, and disposal also matter.

Risk 4: Wastewater problems

A wastewater treatment system needs proper operation and monitoring. I look at the link between the treatment system, operating records, testing, maintenance, and corrective actions.

Risk 5: Customer information risk

Global customers increasingly ask factories for environmental performance information. If the factory cannot explain where its data comes from, customer communication becomes harder.

A well-managed FEM process gives the factory a clearer information structure.

That can be valuable beyond the HIGG assessment itself.

I always tell factory managers: good environmental records are not paperwork for an auditor. They are information for management.


5. Can a HIGG FEM Application Help Reduce Factory Costs?


I am careful about making promises here.

A Higg FEM assessment does not automatically save money. It does, however, help a factory measure areas where unnecessary consumption may exist. The savings come from the actions management takes after seeing the data.

For example, imagine a factory that reports higher energy consumption every year. That number alone does not tell us why.

After investigation, management might find longer operating hours, old equipment, compressed-air leaks, inefficient lighting, poor temperature control, or changes in production mix.

Another factory might discover that water consumption is unusually high because a process is being cleaned more often than necessary.

Another may find that a large amount of material becomes waste during cutting.

These are operational issues, but environmental data can help make them visible.

If production rises by 30% and electricity rises by 10%, the total energy number has increased, but energy use per unit of output may have improved. Without the production context, management can easily misunderstand the result.

That simple comparison can turn a compliance task into a useful management tool.


6. Building a Standardized Factory System Through HIGG FEM


One of my favorite parts of this work is helping factories move away from “one person knows everything.”

That kind of system is risky.

If the EHS manager leaves, who knows where the wastewater records are? If the engineer changes jobs, who understands the energy calculation? If the warehouse manager leaves, who updates the chemical inventory?

A strong system should continue working even when people change.

For that reason, I recommend giving each important process a clear owner and a simple written procedure.

My basic standardization model

  1. Define the responsibility. One person or department owns the process.

  2. Define the data source. Everyone knows where the number comes from.

  3. Define the frequency. Monthly, quarterly, annually, or as otherwise appropriate.

  4. Define the review. Someone checks whether the information makes sense.

  5. Define the action. A clear process exists when results are abnormal.

  6. Keep evidence organized. Records can be found without a last-minute search.

This structure can also support other management systems.

For example, environmental responsibilities can connect with ISO 14001. Worker safety and chemical handling can connect with ISO 45001. Corrective action and document control can connect with ISO 9001.

I do not recommend creating three or four separate systems for the same factory activity if one well-designed process can satisfy several management needs.

The goal should be less duplication, clearer responsibility, and better control.

For a growing manufacturer, this becomes especially important. A small factory may manage everything informally. As production grows, informal management becomes harder to control.
