One important point should be clear: HIGG FEM is not simply a traditional pass-or-fail audit. The purpose of the assessment is to measure environmental performance and identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Third-party verification provides an independent check that the facility understood and answered its self-assessment correctly.

I normally divide the preparation into four simple questions: scope, data, evidence, and reality.

First: understand the scope

Before doing anything else, I want to know what the facility actually does.

Is it a spinning mill? A weaving facility? A dyeing and finishing plant? A garment factory? An accessory manufacturer? Does it use chemicals directly in production? Does it operate an onsite wastewater treatment plant? Does it have boilers, generators, refrigeration equipment, or other significant energy sources?

The answers affect which HIGG FEM questions apply and what evidence the factory should prepare.

Second: understand the data

Environmental data should have a clear source.

If a factory reports electricity consumption, I want to know whether the figure comes from utility bills, meters, or another approved calculation method. If water consumption is reported, I want to know which water sources are included and how the figures were collected.

This is especially important for factories with several buildings, production lines, meters, or water sources.

Third: organize the evidence

Good records should be easy to find.

Instead of asking employees to search through hundreds of emails, I prefer a simple evidence structure. Energy records in one place. Water records in another. Wastewater documents together. Chemical records together. Waste documentation together.

The exact evidence depends on the applicable HIGG FEM version and facility operations, but the basic idea remains the same: if an answer matters, the factory should know how to support it.

Fourth: compare paperwork with reality

This is the part I consider especially important.

A procedure can say that chemicals are inspected every month. I want to know whether the inspection actually happens.

A spreadsheet can show water consumption. I want to know whether the data comes from a reliable source.

A waste management procedure can look perfect. I still want to understand what happens in the waste storage area.

The assessment should describe the factory that actually exists, not the factory that someone wishes existed.

Current Higg FEM guidance requires the facility to complete and post its self-assessment before verification can begin. Verification is conducted by an approved verifier, and the verification process is intended to confirm that the facility accurately understood and answered the FEM self-assessment.

For that reason, I always advise factories to perform an internal quality check before the formal verification starts.

It is much easier to correct an obvious data gap early than to discover it when everyone is under deadline pressure.


3. Risk Control: What HIGG FEM Helps Me See Inside a Factory


When I look at HIGG FEM, I do not see seven separate boxes.

I see one connected production system.

Energy affects greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs. Water use affects wastewater. Chemicals can affect production, worker safety, wastewater, waste, and environmental compliance. Poor waste control can mean lost materials and extra disposal costs.

That connection is where the assessment becomes useful for management.

Energy and greenhouse gas risk

Energy is often one of the easiest areas to measure, but factories sometimes stop after collecting the utility bill.

I prefer to look at the trend.

If electricity consumption rises 10%, what happened to production? If production increased 20%, the situation may actually have improved when measured per unit of output. If production stayed flat, the increase deserves investigation.

This is why I encourage manufacturers to connect environmental data with production data whenever appropriate.

Water risk

Water can be a major resource issue for textile manufacturing, especially in wet processing.

HIGG FEM guidance distinguishes water used for production from water used for domestic purposes. That distinction is useful because it helps management understand where water is really being consumed.

For a dyeing facility, for example, water may be used for dyeing, rinsing, cleaning, steam generation, and other production-related activities. Looking at the total number alone does not tell management which process needs attention.

Wastewater risk

Wastewater is another area where operational control matters.

I want factories to know the sources of their wastewater, understand the treatment route, track relevant quantities, and maintain appropriate monitoring and control records.

If a factory changes its production chemistry or process conditions, the environmental team should understand whether that change could affect wastewater treatment.

Chemical risk

Chemicals need a complete management chain.

It starts with purchasing and continues through receiving, identification, storage, use, worker training, emergency response, waste handling, and disposal.

A chemical inventory is useful only when it reflects what is actually on site.

One simple exercise I recommend is to compare the inventory with the physical storage area. If the spreadsheet says ten chemicals but the warehouse contains fifteen, the factory has a control problem. It may be a small problem, but it is still a useful signal.

Waste risk

Waste should not be treated only as something that leaves the factory.

I also ask where it came from.

Excess fabric waste may point to cutting losses. Excess rejected materials may point to quality problems. High packaging waste may point to purchasing or logistics practices.

So, in my view, HIGG FEM environmental management can help a factory look upstream instead of simply managing the waste after it has already been created.

That is good environmental practice, but it can also be good production management.

I often hear factory managers say, “Sustainability is important, but we have to control costs.”

I agree.

And that is exactly why I think environmental data should be connected to business decisions.

A factory pays for electricity. It pays for water. It pays for fuel. It pays for chemicals. It pays to treat wastewater. It pays to transport and dispose of waste.

If resources are being wasted, the factory is usually paying for that waste somewhere.

Data basis: the environmental categories reflect Higg FEM topics. The improvement directions are practical management examples and should not be interpreted as guaranteed cost savings.

Let me give you a simple example.

Suppose a factory uses 1 million kWh of electricity in a year. The next year it uses 1.1 million kWh. At first glance, that looks bad.

But suppose production also increased by 20%.

Now the factory needs to look at energy intensity rather than only total consumption. The business may actually be producing more goods with less energy per unit.

This is why I like the idea of “measure first, invest second.”

Before buying new equipment, management should understand where the largest performance gaps are. A simple maintenance action may sometimes deliver more value than a major capital investment.

The same principle applies to water.

If a factory knows which process consumes the most water, it can focus its improvement work there rather than launching a broad and expensive water-saving program with no clear target.

Waste tells another story.

If a cutting operation creates a large amount of textile waste, management can investigate pattern optimization, cutting efficiency, material planning, or other process factors. The environmental issue becomes a production issue.

This is one of the reasons I encourage factories to use their HIGG FEM data throughout the year, not just when a customer asks for the assessment.

When a factory has reliable environmental records in a controlled system, it can respond more quickly to customer sustainability requests, internal reviews, ESG data collection, and other environmental assessments.

5. Building a Standardized Environmental Management System Around HIGG FEM


I do not recommend preparing for HIGG FEM by creating a special system that is used once a year and forgotten afterward.

A better approach is to connect HIGG FEM with the factory's normal management system.

This is especially useful for manufacturers that already use ISO 14001 or other environmental management frameworks.

Give every major area an owner

Someone should be responsible for energy. Someone should manage water. Someone should control wastewater information. Someone should manage chemical records. Someone should track waste.

The responsibility does not have to belong to one person. What matters is that the factory knows who does what.

Keep records simple and traceable

I do not believe more paperwork automatically means better management.

A good record should answer three questions:

  • What happened?

  • When did it happen?

  • Where did the information come from?

If a calculation is used, the factory should also understand how the calculation was made.

Review data regularly

Monthly environmental data is useful only if somebody reviews it.

I recommend looking for unusual changes rather than simply entering numbers into a spreadsheet.

For example, if water consumption suddenly doubles, the team should investigate before the end of the year. It could be a leak, a production change, a meter issue, or a data entry error.

Connect improvement actions to management

When an issue is found, give it an owner and deadline.

Then check whether the action actually worked.

This simple cycle can be used for energy, water, waste, chemicals, wastewater, and many other management issues.

Another important point is version control. Higg FEM requirements can be updated. For example, the current FEM 2025 resources include updates to energy and greenhouse gas calculations, water and waste calculations, and other assessment guidance.

So I never recommend copying an old year's answers forward without checking the current requirements.

The factory should confirm the applicable FEM version and use the current guidance before completing its assessment.
