One point is worth making clear: Higg FEM is an assessment, not simply a conventional pass-or-fail certification. A facility uses the FEM to measure and understand environmental performance. Third-party verification can then provide an independent review of the accuracy of the completed assessment.

Let me give a simple example.
Imagine a factory's electricity use has increased by 12% in one year. Management may initially think the increase is normal. But after comparing electricity with production volume, the team discovers that production increased by only 3%.
Now there is a useful question.
Why did energy intensity rise?
Maybe a boiler became less efficient. Maybe a compressed-air system has leaks. Maybe equipment is running during idle time. Maybe production scheduling has changed. Maybe the measurement itself is wrong.
Higg FEM does not provide the answer to every operational question. It provides a framework for asking better questions.

A strong factory should not become “Higg-ready” only one week before verification.
