For me, the important thing is that these seven areas are connected. Energy data may involve engineering and finance. Water data may involve production and EHS. Chemical information may involve purchasing, warehouse and production. Wastewater information may involve EHS, engineering and external laboratories.

So I do not recommend putting the whole Higg FEM project on the shoulders of one person.

A better approach is to create a small internal team with clear responsibilities.

Higg FEM is not a simple pass-or-fail audit

Where did this number come from?

Can another person follow the same trail and reach the same answer?

I have learned that factories rarely want an environmental problem. Most problems start because something is not visible.

A meter is not checked.

A chemical list is not updated.

That is a much stronger management cycle.

  8. Keep evidence organized so it can be retrieved easily.

This does not need to be complicated.

In fact, simple systems are often better because people actually use them.

One data owner, one source, one clear rule

I often recommend a simple internal rule:

One data category should have a clear owner, a defined source and a consistent calculation method.

For example, if electricity consumption comes from utility bills, the factory should define how monthly figures are recorded. If water comes from meters, the meter-reading method should be clear. If waste quantities come from disposal records, those records should be maintained and matched with internal tracking.

This makes future verification easier.

It also makes management meetings easier because people can discuss the same numbers.

Why this helps international customers
